Age Cymru’s Response to DWP announcement on claiming Pension Credit
Published on 11 October 2017 02:00 PM
Responding to the DWP's announcement urging older people to claim Pension Credit to top up their retirement income, Age Cymru's Chief Executive, Ian Thomas said:
"It is extremely worrying that four in ten pensioners could be missing out on claiming pension credit. With more than £3.3 billion going unclaimed across the UK, this amounts to an average of £2,000 for each entitled family who do not claim.
"Our own research suggests that more than £168m went unclaimed in Wales despite the fact that some 18% of pensioner households here are living in poverty.
"We believe there are several reasons behind the relatively low take up in Wales. Some older people feel too embarrassed to claim benefits of any kind while others are simply unaware of their availability. We have also been told that the claims procedures can be too difficult to complete, particularly for those with sight impairment or with limited literary skills.
"We would urge pensioners in Wales to claim all their entitlements so they can live a life free from the stresses of extreme poverty.
"Age Cymru and our local partners can help steer older people and their carers through the claims process. Simply call our national advice line free of charge on 08000 223 444, contact a local Age Cymru partner.
