Age Cymru's Michael Phillips said:
"Isolation and loneliness amongst older people in Wales is a growing problem, particularly in rural areas like Carmarthenshire. Many of the traditional places where older people used to meet and greet one another such as banks and post offices are being closed down as organisations encourage people to go online.
"At the same time, many of the publicly funded support services such as day centres, lunch clubs, libraries and bus services are being cut back due to a squeeze on local authority spending.
"In response, Age Cymru Sir Gar has organised a number of local initiatives to help tackle loneliness and isolation including a digital inclusion class, seasonal celebrations, as well as a number of community based tea parties where older people can drop in for a cuppa and a chat. We also encourage our volunteers who provide information and advice, to incorporate a social element during their visits to older people. And of course we contribute to a number partnership initiatives in the county including Carmarthenshire United Support Project.
"To extend our work we've recently applied for a Nationwide community grant up to the value of £50,000 so we can continue to support older people by providing flexible, tailored support in their own homes."
